Arden
A hamlet on Kennebec Lake with more artists than intersections.
Why detour
Arden is a five-minute hook south off the 7 and feels like a secret: a handful of streets tucked against Kennebec Lake, quiet water, and a surprising concentration of working artists and craftspeople for a place this size. It’s a regular stop on the area’s studio tours, and the kind of hamlet where the drive in — Shield rock, cedar, lake glimpses — is half the point.
If you’re doing the corridor slowly, Arden pairs naturally with Sharbot Lake: lakes, back roads, and not a franchise logo in sight. Trail riders know it too — the classic back-country route through Kaladar, Arden, Mountain Grove and Sharbot Lake passes right by, part of the region’s rail-trail network.
Arden also has more built recreation than its size suggests: Kennebec Recreation Park in the hamlet has a ball diamond and soccer field for anyone who needs to run around, and Kennebec Wilderness Trails, just north on Kennebec Lake, is 156 acres and 7 km of genuinely rugged hiking through forest and rocky ridge.
A simple pull-off with picnic tables right at the Arden turn — stretch, snack, then take the five-minute run down to the hamlet and its beaches.
