Sharbot Lake & the lake country
This is the corridor's cottage heartland: Sharbot, Silver, Kennebec, Bobs, Crow, Eagle and Christie lakes all within a short drive of the highway, on the southern edge of the Canadian Shield — which means clean, deep, rocky-shored lakes rather than weedy farm-country water. The honest pitch: it's the closest true Shield-lake country to Ottawa, and waterfront here still costs a fraction of Muskoka or the Rideau big lakes. The honest caveats: many properties sit on private lanes (ask about road fees and winter plowing), everything is well-and-septic (budget for inspections), and services mean Sharbot Lake village or a drive to Perth. Commute reality: about 35 minutes to Perth, 1h15–1h30 to Kanata — workable hybrid, punishing daily.
Perth & area
The town option, and a strong one: a genuinely walkable heritage downtown, restaurants and a hospital — the amenity that quietly decides retirements — with the lake country twenty minutes behind it. Stone century homes in town, farms and small acreages around it, and Ottawa about an hour away, which has made Perth a magnet for both retirees and work-from-home movers since 2020. Prices have climbed accordingly; the value play is often the villages around it — Balderson, Maberly, Lanark — rather than Gore Street itself.

The internet question
The most-asked question about living out here, and the one where listings are most useless. The real picture in 2026: fibre has reached most in-town addresses along the corridor (Bell and others, pushed by Ontario's rural broadband programs), but coverage on rural roads changes house by house — one kilometre can be the difference between fibre and nothing. Where fibre stops, the working options are fixed wireless (Xplore and local providers, fine for most work-from-home, weather-sensitive) and Starlink, which has honestly been the rural equalizer — reliable nearly everywhere on the corridor at roughly $140/month.
The advice we'd give a friend: never trust a coverage map on a specific address. Before you waive conditions on a purchase, get the provider to confirm service at that civic address in writing, and knock on a neighbour's door and ask what they actually get — a five-minute conversation that outperforms every map.
