Why detour
Honestly, Henderson is here for completeness and for the back-roads crowd: a tiny crossroads hamlet in the rolling lake country between the 7 and the deeper Land O’ Lakes. If you’re cycling or motorcycling the concession roads north of the highway — which is some of the best quiet riding in Eastern Ontario — you’ll pass through, and you should know where you are. The regional trail route through Arden and Mountain Grove runs this same country, so ATVs and sleds know these back roads as well as the cyclists do.
It’s also a fair sample of what the corridor’s lake country actually is: small lakes, cottage roads, and the kind of quiet people move out here to find. And it hides a genuine prize: Long Lake Beach at nearby Mountain Grove — 130 metres of sand with change rooms and a floating raft, one of the longest beaches anywhere on the route.
