Highway 7 · KM 205 from Ottawa
Marmora
The mine lookout — the corridor's most underrated five-minute stop.
Why stop
Just east of the village, marked off the highway, is the Marmora Mine lookout — and if you’ve never stopped, you are genuinely not ready for it. What was once one of Canada’s larger open-pit iron mines is now a canyon-sized hole filled with impossibly blue-green water, and you can walk right up to the viewing area for free. It’s the corridor’s best five-minute stop and its most reliable “wait, WHAT is that” moment.
The village itself sits on the Crowe River, with Crowe Lake just south — a swimming and paddling spot locals have kept quietly to themselves. Marmora’s mining history runs two centuries deep, and the town wears it well. It’s trail country too: the Hastings Heritage Trail network and its Centre Hastings loop run alongside the village, and the popular Tweed-to-Bancroft riding route makes the mine lookout one of its signature stops.
A canyon-sized former iron mine filled with blue-green water. Free, right off the highway, and the corridor's most reliable "wait, WHAT is that" moment.
